Domino Treewidth

چکیده
We consider a special variant of tree-decompositions, called domino treedecompositions, and the related notion of domino treewidth. In a domino tree-decomposition, each vertex of the graph belongs to at most two nodes of the tree. We prove that for every k, d, there exists a constant ck;d such that a graph with treewidth at most k and maximum degree at most d has domino treewidth at most ck;d. The domino treewidth of a tree can be computed in O(n logn) time. There exist polynomial time algorithms that | for xed k | decide whether a given graphG has domino treewidth at most k. If k is not xed, this problem is NP-complete. The domino treewidth problem is hard for the complexity classes W [t] for all t 2 N, and hence the problem for xed k is unlikely to be solvable in O(n), where c is a constant, not depending on k.

A note on domino treewidth
In [3], Bodlaender and Engelfriet proved that for every k, and d, there exists a constant ck;d, such that every graph with treewidth at most k and maximum degree at most d has domino treewidth at most ck;d. This note gives a new, simpler proof of this fact, with a much better bound for ck;d, namely (9k + 7)d(d+ 1) 1. It is also shown that a lower bound of (kd) holds: there are graphs with domin...

In [DO95], Ding and Oporowski proved that for every k and d, every graph G = (V;E) with treewidth at most k and with maximum degree at most d has a tree decomposition of width at most max(600k2d3; 5400d3), such that every vertex v 2 V belongs to at most two of the sets associated to the nodes in the tree decomposition. Such a tree decomposition was called a domino tree decomposition by Bodlaend...

متن کاملQuantitative Risk Assessment of Condensate Storage Tank, Considering Domino Effects
Introduction: In process industries, some of the primary events may result in secondary events in an industrial unit called the domino effect. Since refinery storage tanks are always at risk of fire and explosion, quantitative risk assessment is important in determining the severity and outcome of an accident, taking into account the effects of dominoes on the main industry, neighbors, and soci...
متن کاملA New Methodology for Frequency Estimation of Second or Higher Level Domino Accidents in Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Using Monte Carlo Simulation
Some of the most destructive accidents of 1980s and 90s which occurred in process industries were domino accidents. Although domino accidents are among the most destructive industrial accidents, there are not much pioneering works done on quantification of them. The analytical formulation of the domino accidents is usually complex and need a deep knowledge of probability rules. Even if the ...
